“Some tourists think Amsterdam is a city of sin, but in truth it is a city of freedom. And in freedom, most people find sin.”
Amsterdam was the first city where I saw the title – “I Love Amsterdam”. Only in some years such titles appeared in other cities and countries. For me it was something unexpected in Europe. First of all I didn’t expect to see such intense bike traffic. The number of bikes was unbelievable. I have never seen so many bikes for my whole life! There was a huge bike parking for like 4-5 floors and it was all full of bikes! Wow! The city was real modern capital – with a lot of people, machines, beautiful modern buildings and it was very clean all around. In general I liked how buildings were built in there – wide roads around, surrounding trees and nice parks. Architecture is incredible – each building is similar to others but at the same time has own uniqueness. The fact it’s stand on the river Amstel gives the city a special charm. There are very romantic boat rides inside the city during which you can see the whole beauty, to get know its regions and sights and feel the whole atmosphere of the city. A lot of flowers and trees make you feel cozy. It’s a very romantic city – you can walk along streets enjoying architecture and views. And it was the first city where I saw a lot of electric chargers for cars so it was one of few ecological cities in Europe.
The famous sights
Amsterdam is famous by it’s tulip fields. If you are lucky to come to Amsterdam the time they are blossoming, you will see the most incredible flowers and the fields are so wide. You can find flowers of all possible colors. Even I wasn’t fond of such flowers, I liked them and even wanted to buy some to make a present to my uncle. But I didn’t buy seeds as I was only in the middle of my trip (which was more than a half of a month) so they would die on the road. But for sure – those flowers are unique and determine this amazing city.
People all over the world come to Netherlands because you can try a weed there – it’s allowed to smoke anywhere. And for me it was a contrast. People were smoking it everywhere – on the streets, bars, even on the parks. I saw a very strange guy with dreds on the park who seemed to be smoking the whole day and he was all lost or maybe just the opposite – found himself 🙂 LOL But in any case he looked funny to me and it was interesting to watch him and what he did. Till the end of the day I had a headache from all that smell as I couldn’t hide anywhere from it. As for my surprise, even it’s allowed to smoke everywhere, Netherlands is one of the safest countries in the world! As I found out later, all prisons were closed in there as there were not a lot of criminals for even one prison. So even something happened, they rent a place in close countries for criminals. This is what other countries have to learn! There is a big problem in the world with drugs and there are no problems at all in that amazing country. It’s like with kids – if you forbid them something – there will be troubles for sure, but if you allow everything it doesn’t mean there will be bad consequences. Of course weed isn’t a hard drug, but it’s a drug and it has these effects people are looking for – to get lost, forget reality, feel freedom. Of course I have never tried it myself as it’s not something what would make me happy or would help to find answers so for me I don’t need such push. As far as I understood that is one of the main reason which attracts tourists to come to Amsterdam and locals are not very happy because its smell is everywhere and it’s bother them to do regular things, like go to work, enjoy the time outside with kids or enjoy dates. But still it’s not critical and it’s more quiet on other cities.
One of other famous and weird for me things in Amsterdam is red light district. Prostitution is also allowed in there. So when it becomes dark this district fills with people. There are also a lot of sex shops, museums and bars with sexual direction. But most interesting of course are showcases of shops – ground floors of usual buildings where regular people live. But apartments are very expensive as it’s the center of the city. Those women who work on this popular street are entrepreneurs. Their business is official, legal – they rent whose boxs on the main street and pay taxes. Walking along the street in the evening and at night you can see all kinds of women and men and choose the one you prefer. Big wide windows allow people to see the whole “product” and choose. It’s not allowed to take pictures of those “workers” but you can enjoy and make them earn. It sounds wild that such business is legal and with light drugs it seems dangerous but in real, it’s not. People can do what they want and enjoy life how it is, be free and express their desires.
So there are really a lot of interesting sights and thing to do and explore in Amsterdam and for sure everyone will find something unique and excited. Feel free to share with us your experience and things which surprised you
